Rest for your souls
Personally I will never experience what it’s like to be a mum – but I do know from personal experience of being a brat son to my mum – that mum’s have it tough! And sadly some people write off mum’s as “just a mum”. No – mothers are often so much more than just that! Most mothers are housekeepers, chefs, teachers, nurses, coaches, chauffers, story-tellers, monster killers, planners, organisers, lawyers, judges, negotiators, investigators, best-friends, WONDER WOMEN – & so much more! So it’s no surprise that often mum’s will respond – when asked how they’re going – with a simple: “I’m tired.” Mum’s do a lot, and have it tough!
So let me encourage all you hardworking mums out there (& the rest of who are tired!) with Jesus’ words:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30
Jesus says to the weary and the burdened – “I will give you rest” & with him “you will find rest for your souls”. This is a very appealing promise to someone who is weary and burdened! How do we get this rest for our souls? Jesus tells us to do two things: 1. “Come to me” & 2. “learn from me”. Feeling weary this mother’s day? Feeling burdened by being a mother? Come to Jesus. Come to him as you are with all your worries, concerns, stress, hurt, & pain. Jesus may not be a mother, but he is the Son of God, & he knows the peace and rest your soul desires is found in Him alone. Come to Him. It’s a very simple remedy, isn’t it? We come as we are and we learn from Jesus how to live.
This wonderful promise Jesus gives to all of us is not just temporary rest in the here and now, through the worries and burdens of this life (though he certainly does offer that to us – see also Gal 5:22 & Phil 4:6, 7) – but it’s also eternal rest. In Jesus, we find rest for our souls for now and into all eternity – when we simply come to him and learn from him.
So this Mother’s Day – come to Jesus and find rest for your souls!
