500th Anniversary of the Reformation

On the 31st October,500 years ago, an Augustinium monk named Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to a Church door in Wittenberg ,Germany. This unintentionally sparked, what is now known and celebrated, as “the Reformation”- a big Church movement away from the false Catholic teaching of that day towards the truth of the Bible. This movement spread throughout Europe and has shaped, not only modern Christianity ,but all of western society as we know it.

This year we join with many other Churches around the world in celebrating the Reformation .Why? Because in the reformation the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ was rediscovered, upheld and heralded– and we today, stand on the shoulders of these men and women who fought (& even died) for such truth.

The main truths that were rediscovered in the reformation are often referred to as the Five Sola’s (“ Sola” is latin meaning alone”): Sola Gratia-Grace alone; Sola Fide-Faith alone; Solus Christus  – Christ alone; Sola Scriptura– Scripture alone; Soli Deo Gloria– Glory to God alone.

Starting today and over the next 5 weeks, we will be looking at these five core truths from the Bible and celebrating what they mean for us today. I am looking forward to it!

For those who are planning to follow the sermon series in their Life Group’s– you will need to buy your own copy of the study guides ( and DVD’s) of Dominic Steele’s “ideas that changed the world” – a useful resource, you can buy on line at: http://www.mattiasmedia.com.au/ideas-that changed– the –world.

There’s also a FREE seminar on the Reformation by Moore College Principal , Mark Thompson, at St Luke’s Miranda, this Wednesday,26th April.

It’s going to be great! Please grab your registration form and book in to secure your spot!

For those unable to make the BIG Weekend Away, it’s also going to be a BIG weekend at home with Bishop Reg Piper coming to both 7.45am & 9.30am services to speak on the same topic! Either way– get excited for 7-10th— it’s going to be awesome!.
