For basketball fans, I heard that Lebron James, the world’s best player, has said to his coach that he will play any role the coach wants this year – he’ll do “whatever is best for the team”. That’s easy to say but much harder to do. Would you be willing to pray to our Heavenly father, “I’m willing to serve you and the team in whatever role you want this coming year. Whatever is for their best I will give it a go”. That’s how Jesus said we are to show our love for Him, by lovingly serving His family, our brothers and sisters in Christ, whatever he asks, whatever the cost. Jesus said in John 13: 34-35 “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Our Lord didn’t show how much you love me by building me a cathedral and dressing it in gold, or painting me a picture, or singing me an aria (or the best of carols). He said, “show your love for me (who needs nothing) by caring for my family who need everything you can give them.” Most of us are tired and befuddled this Christmas. So it is really hard to love and care for others, to go the extra mile. But Romans 8:10-11 promises us God can help us because “Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.” Pray for us all that by the power of God’s Spirit at work in us – we would do the impossible this Christmas and love others as Jesus has loved us.
Your brother in Christ, Graham Crew
