It’s almost unthinkable: finding joy in the middle of life’s difficulties. For most of us, trials are things to be dreaded and avoided—whether it’s the loss of a job, a broken relationship, or a serious illness. Painful experiences seem to have no place in a joyful life. So how could anyone ever believe that trials should be embraced, let alone considered “pure joy”?
This radical idea comes from the Book of James in the Bible. James invites us to see challenges in a way that seems upside down: "Consider it pure joy... whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance" (James 1:2-3). At first glance, this sounds almost impossible, but maybe James is pushing us to look deeper. What if life's trials aren't just random pains, but opportunities to grow?
